How long does joint replacement surgery take?
The time required for joint replacement surgery depends on which joint is being replaced, the type of replacement, and whether it is a first-time or revision procedure. For common procedures such as total knee or total hip replacement, the actual operation generally takes around one to two hours. A standard knee replacement may take about 60 to 90 minutes, while a hip replacement commonly takes around 90 minutes. Complex cases can take longer.
The total time spent in the operating area is longer than the surgical time. Before surgery, the anaesthesia team prepares the patient. After the operation, the patient is monitored in a recovery area until the anaesthesia begins to wear off. Revision joint replacement, severe deformity, previous surgery, or the need for additional procedures can increase the operating time.
Patients should treat the estimated duration as a general guide rather than a fixed time. The priority is accurate implant positioning and safe surgery, not completing the procedure quickly. Dr. Atul Mishra and the ASIC Clinic team assess the joint, imaging, overall health, and complexity of the case before explaining the expected surgical and recovery timeline.
