What tests are needed before hip surgery?
Before hip surgery, patients usually undergo a combination of joint imaging, blood tests, heart assessment, and general medical evaluation. The exact tests depend on the type of procedure, the patient’s age, and existing medical conditions.
Common pre-operative tests may include
- X-rays of the hip and pelvis
- Complete blood count
- Blood sugar testing
- Kidney and liver function tests
- Blood clotting tests
- Urine examination
- Electrocardiogram, particularly in older patients
- Chest imaging when medically indicated
- Additional cardiac or anaesthetic investigations if required
Some procedures may require CT scans or other advanced imaging for surgical planning. For example, certain robotic hip replacement systems use a pre-operative CT scan to create a three-dimensional model of the hip.
At ASIC Clinic, Dr. Atul Mishra reviews the clinical examination and imaging, while the anaesthesia and medical teams assess whether the patient is medically fit for surgery. Additional tests are ordered according to the individual patient rather than using the same investigation list for everyone.
