How to treat a minor ligament sprain at home?

How-to Guides 1 min read Updated October 6, 2026

A mild ligament sprain can often be managed initially at home if there is no major instability, deformity, or inability to bear weight.

Early care may include

  • Reduce activities that increase pain.
  • Apply cold packs for short periods.
  • Use compression if advised and comfortable.
  • Elevate the injured limb.
  • Begin gentle movement as pain allows.
  • Avoid returning immediately to running, jumping, or sport.
  • Use pain-relieving medicines only if medically suitable.

Complete rest for too long is not always helpful. Once the initial pain settles, gradual movement and strengthening are usually important for recovery.

Get medical advice if

  • You cannot bear weight.
  • The joint repeatedly gives way.
  • Swelling is severe.
  • There was a loud pop during the injury.
  • Movement remains significantly restricted.
  • Pain does not begin improving.
  • You suspect a complete ligament tear.

A seemingly minor sprain can occasionally involve a more significant ligament or meniscus injury.

Dr. Atul Mishra evaluates sports and ligament injuries using the mechanism of injury, physical examination, stability tests, and imaging when required before deciding whether home care, physiotherapy, bracing, or surgery is appropriate. ASIC Clinic lists arthroscopy and sports injury treatment as part of his orthopaedic practice.
