Can arthroscopy treat a rotator cuff tear?

Arthroscopic Surgery 1 min read Updated October 21, 2026

Yes. Many rotator cuff tears can be treated using arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Through small incisions, the surgeon can examine the damaged tendon and, where appropriate, repair it back to the bone.

However, not every rotator cuff tear needs surgery.

Non-surgical treatment may be appropriate when

  • The tear is small
  • Symptoms are manageable
  • Shoulder strength is reasonably preserved
  • The patient has lower physical demands
  • Physiotherapy improves pain and movement

Treatment may include physiotherapy, activity modification, pain medication, and other non-surgical measures.

When arthroscopic repair may be considered

Surgery may be considered when:

  • Pain persists despite appropriate treatment
  • Significant weakness is present
  • The tear is large or complete
  • The injury occurred suddenly after trauma
  • Shoulder function is significantly affected
  • The patient needs strong shoulder function for work or sports

What happens during arthroscopic repair?

The surgeon inserts a small camera into the shoulder and evaluates the tendon, cartilage, labrum, and surrounding structures.

The torn rotator cuff tendon can then be repaired using specialised instruments and anchors where appropriate.

Dr. Atul Mishra has specific training in shoulder arthroscopy from the University of Arizona and treats rotator cuff tears and other shoulder conditions using arthroscopic techniques where suitable.
