How long does a ligament injury take to heal?

Sports & Ligament Injuries 1 min read Updated September 17, 2026

The healing time for a ligament injury depends on the ligament involved and the severity of the tear. A mild sprain may improve over a few weeks, while a moderate injury can take longer. Severe or complete tears may require several months of rehabilitation, especially if the joint has become unstable or if surgery is needed.

Recovery should not be judged by pain alone. A patient may feel better before the ligament or surrounding muscles are ready for running, jumping, or sport. Rehabilitation usually focuses on restoring movement, strength, balance, and joint control. After ACL reconstruction, for example, return to sport can take many months and may take up to a year for some patients.

Factors such as age, general health, associated meniscus or cartilage injuries, adherence to physiotherapy, and the demands of the patient‘s sport all affect recovery. The safest return is usually based on functional testing and the surgeon or physiotherapist’s assessment rather than on a fixed number of weeks.

Swelling and pain often settle before strength and joint control are fully restored. This is one reason athletes can re-injure a joint if they return too quickly. A staged rehabilitation programme and, for higher-level sport, functional testing can help confirm whether the joint is ready for more demanding activity.
