How long does it take to recover from knee surgery?

Knee Surgery 1 min read Updated September 17, 2026

Recovery from knee surgery varies greatly depending on the operation. A minor arthroscopic procedure may allow light activities within days or weeks, while ligament reconstruction, cartilage surgery, or knee replacement can take several months. After ACL surgery, return to high-level sport may take many months and can take up to a year in some patients.

After knee replacement, patients are usually encouraged to stand and walk with support soon after surgery. The first weeks focus on pain control, wound healing, knee movement, and safe walking. Strength and endurance then improve gradually through physiotherapy and regular exercises. Full recovery can take several months, and some improvement may continue beyond that.

Age, general health, muscle strength, the type of surgery, associated injuries, and consistency with rehabilitation all influence recovery. Patients should follow the surgeon‘s guidance about driving, work, gym activity, kneeling, and sport rather than using someone else’s recovery timeline as a target.

A useful recovery plan should include milestones rather than only dates. These may include controlling swelling, fully straightening the knee, improving bending, walking without a significant limp, and rebuilding strength. The final goal will differ for someone returning to office work, manual labour, recreational exercise, or competitive sport.
