How to prepare for knee replacement surgery?
Preparing for knee replacement begins with the pre-operative assessment arranged by the surgeon or hospital. This may include blood tests, X-rays, an ECG, medical clearance, and an anaesthesia review. Patients should give the team a complete list of medicines and supplements because some drugs, including certain blood thinners, may need to be adjusted before surgery. These medicines should never be stopped without medical advice.
It also helps to prepare physically. Staying as active as pain allows, performing recommended strengthening exercises, improving nutrition, managing blood sugar if diabetic, and stopping smoking can support recovery. Any dental or skin infection should be reported because active infection may affect the timing of surgery.
At home, remove loose rugs and clutter, arrange a safe sleeping and sitting area, and organise help for shopping, meals, or transport during the early recovery period. Keep frequently used items within easy reach. Follow the hospital’s instructions about fasting, bathing, and arrival time on the day of surgery.
Patients should also plan for the first week at home. Arrange transport, keep essential medicines and contact numbers accessible, and make sure the bathroom and sleeping area are easy to reach. If the surgeon has provided prehabilitation exercises, doing them regularly can make it easier to use crutches, stand from a chair, and begin rehabilitation after the operation.
