What are the most common sports injuries?
Common sports injuries include muscle strains, ligament sprains or tears, meniscus injuries, tendon problems, fractures, dislocations, and overuse injuries. The exact pattern depends on the sport. Running and jumping sports often affect the knee and ankle, while throwing and contact sports may also involve the shoulder, elbow, or wrist.
In the knee, ACL injuries, other ligament injuries, and meniscus tears are common during activities that involve sudden stopping, turning, landing, or direct contact. Overuse injuries can develop more gradually when training load increases too quickly or when the body does not get enough recovery time.
Not every sports injury needs surgery. Early treatment may include rest from the aggravating activity, ice, compression, elevation, pain management, and physiotherapy. A medical assessment is important if there is severe swelling, inability to bear weight, deformity, locking, repeated giving way, or persistent pain. Correct diagnosis helps prevent a minor injury from becoming a long-term problem.
Prevention is also important. Appropriate warm-up, gradual training progression, strength and balance work, suitable footwear, adequate rest, and attention to technique can reduce the risk of many injuries. Athletes should avoid repeatedly training through pain that changes movement or performance, because compensation can place extra stress on other joints and tissues.
