What happens if I skip physiotherapy after knee surgery?
Skipping physiotherapy after knee surgery can slow recovery and make it harder to regain movement, strength, and confidence while walking. After surgery, pain and swelling often make patients protect the leg and move less. Without the right exercises, the knee may remain stiff, the thigh muscles may become weak, and bending or fully straightening the knee may become more difficult.
Physiotherapy is not the same for every knee operation. Rehabilitation after a knee replacement differs from rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, or cartilage surgery. Some procedures require early movement and weight-bearing, while others need temporary restrictions to protect repaired tissue. This is why patients should follow the programme given by their surgeon and physiotherapist rather than using general exercises found online.
Missing one session does not automatically cause permanent damage, but repeatedly avoiding exercises or stopping rehabilitation without advice can affect function and delay a return to normal activities. Patients who are struggling because of pain, transport, fear, or lack of time should speak with the care team instead of stopping. Dr. Atul Mishra and the rehabilitation team can adjust exercise intensity, pain control, and the home programme so rehabilitation remains safe and manageable.
