What is shoulder replacement surgery, and who needs it?
Shoulder replacement surgery is a procedure in which damaged parts of the shoulder joint are replaced with artificial components. It is generally considered when severe joint damage causes persistent pain and loss of function that has not improved sufficiently with non-surgical treatment.
ASIC Clinic currently includes shoulder replacement among the joint replacement treatments offered by Dr. Atul Mishra.
Conditions that may lead to shoulder replacement include
- Advanced shoulder arthritis
- Severe cartilage loss
- Certain complex fractures
- Rotator cuff tear arthropathy
- Previous shoulder surgery that has failed
- Severe joint destruction causing pain and stiffness
When is surgery usually considered?
Shoulder replacement may be discussed when:
- Pain is persistent or severe
- Night pain affects sleep
- Shoulder movement is significantly restricted
- Everyday activities become difficult
- Medicines and physiotherapy no longer provide sufficient relief
- Imaging shows advanced joint damage
Are all shoulder replacements the same?
No.
Different procedures can be used depending on the condition of the joint and rotator cuff. These may include conventional total shoulder replacement or reverse shoulder replacement in selected patients.
The correct procedure depends on:
- Bone quality
- Rotator cuff condition
- Joint anatomy
- Age
- Previous surgery
- Type of arthritis or injury
Dr. Atul Mishra evaluates the shoulder clinically and reviews imaging before deciding whether arthroscopy, continued non-surgical care, or shoulder replacement is appropriate. His practice includes both shoulder arthroscopy and joint replacement.
