Arthroscopy and open surgery<\/a> are two different ways of reaching and treating a joint. In arthroscopy, the surgeon makes a few small incisions and inserts a camera into the joint. Because arthroscopy uses smaller incisions, it usually causes less disturbance to the surrounding skin and soft tissues. Many arthroscopic procedures are completed as day-care surgery, and patients may have smaller scars and a faster early recovery. However, arthroscopy is not automatically the better option for every condition. Some complex injuries, severe joint damage, fractures, joint replacements, or revision procedures require the wider access provided by open surgery.
