The muscles and tissues are still healing, and the joint may be swollen and stiff. Exercises are designed to restore movement, strength, balance, and walking ability, so they may temporarily make the area feel more uncomfortable.

Physiotherapy should be challenging but should not involve severe, sharp, or uncontrolled pain. Discomfort should remain tolerable and usually settle after rest, ice, or the pain-relief plan recommended by the surgical team. If an exercise causes sudden sharp pain, increasing swelling, new numbness, or pain that remains intense after the session, the patient should stop that exercise and speak with the physiotherapist or surgeon. The programme may need to be modified.

Taking prescribed pain medicine at the recommended time, pacing exercises, and using ice afterwards may make rehabilitation easier. Patients should not follow a ‘no pain, no gain’ approach or force the joint beyond the advised range. At the same time, avoiding all movement because of expected mild discomfort can slow recovery. Dr. Atul Mishra and the physiotherapy team can balance pain control with safe progress according to the operation and the patient’s healing.

Some aching, tightness, stretching, or mild discomfort is common during physiotherapy after joint replacement.
