Is a CT scan needed before robotic knee replacement?
A CT scan is needed for some robotic knee replacement systems, but not for all of them. Certain robotic platforms use a pre-operative CT scan to create a three-dimensional model of the patient’s knee, while other systems use X-rays or map the anatomy during surgery without requiring a CT scan.
When CT-based technology is used, the scan helps the surgical team understand the shape and alignment of the knee before the operation. This information can be used to plan implant size, bone preparation, component position, and alignment according to the patient’s anatomy.
CT-free robotic systems collect anatomical information during the operation using trackers and computer mapping. These systems can create a surgical plan without a separate pre-operative CT scan, while still providing detailed measurements and guidance during the procedure.
At ASIC Clinic, Dr. Atul Mishra reviews the patient’s examination and imaging before deciding what additional scans are required. Whether a CT scan is needed depends on the robotic platform being used and the individual surgical plan, rather than robotic knee replacement automatically requiring a CT scan.
