What technology is used in robotic joint replacement?
Robotic joint replacement combines computer-based surgical planning, tracking technology, specialised instruments, and robotic guidance to help the surgeon prepare the joint and position the implant accurately. The exact technology varies according to the robotic platform being used.
Some systems use a pre-operative CT scan to create a three-dimensional digital model of the patient’s knee or hip. Other systems are image-free and create a digital representation by mapping specific anatomical points during the operation.
Tracking sensors or arrays used during surgery allow the computer to identify the position of the bones and instruments in real time. Depending on the system, a robotic arm or robotic cutting guide can then assist with bone preparation according to the surgical plan.
Dr. Atul Mishra uses the information provided by the robotic system to assess factors such as alignment, implant position, joint movement, and soft-tissue balance. The technology provides measurements and physical guidance, but the clinical decisions and execution of the operation remain with the surgeon.
