Robotic knee replacement is considered a surgical option for many patients who are suitable for knee replacement. The robotic system is used as an additional tool to assist the surgeon with planning and precision. The surgeon remains in control, and the operation is performed in a hospital using the same general safety principles as other joint replacement procedures.

The potential complications are broadly similar to those of conventional knee replacement. These can include infection, blood clots, bleeding, stiffness, nerve or blood-vessel injury, implant problems, and anaesthesia-related complications. Robotic assistance does not remove these risks, and it does not guarantee that every patient will have a faster or pain-free recovery.

Safety depends on more than the technology. The patient’s general health, control of conditions such as diabetes, surgeon experience, hospital infection-prevention practices, and post-operative rehabilitation are also important. Patients should discuss why robotic surgery is being recommended and whether it offers a meaningful advantage for their specific knee condition.

Patients should also ask whether robotic assistance adds any risks specific to the system, such as additional pin sites or imaging requirements, and how the team manages them. The most important safety discussion remains the patient’s overall surgical risk, including infection, clots, heart or lung issues, and wound healing, rather than the robot alone.
